Netflix is a subscription-based service that offers thousands of movies and television programs to its customers. Subscribers of Netflix have the option to stream media to their media devices, such as gaming consoles, laptops, or personal computers. For an extra fee, Netflix customers have the ability to order a DVD to be delivered to their home without due dates or late fees.

Netflix: What makes it different?

The main advantage that Netflix has over competitors is the ability to stream media directly from the internet. There is no need to drive to a store or DVD vending machine, nor is there a need to wait for DVDs to be delivered by mail. Other competitors may offer a brick-and-mortar store and mailing service without the abiltiy to stream, while others only offer DVD vending machines.

Another advantage is the sheer amount of movies and television programs available for viewing. Netflix has a unique deal with Starz, in which Netflix customers have the ability to rent or stream around a thousand movies or original series owned by Starz without having to pay for the Starz premium channel subscription fee. Members also have the ability to stream the Starz TV channel live.

Netflix vs. primary competitors (sites similar to Netflix)

Netflix has two main competitors, Blockbuster and Redbox:

Blockbuster: Blockbuster is a competitor of Netflix that offers  brick-and-mortar stores, online streaming capabilities, and rental by mail. While Netflix does not share all of the capabilites of Blockbuster, such as the ability to walk or drive to a store, it has other advantages.

While Blockbuster does offer online streaming of movies, it does not have a subscription service for these movies, and has a rental fee for each film. The rental fees for these films ranges from free to $3.99. Blockbuster does offer a subscription for rental by mail, however, it is more costly than Netflix , at $9.99 versus Netflix's $7.99 per month.

Redbox: Redbox is a DVD-vending machine service with machines located throughout the United States. The price to rent a movie is $1.20 per day, $1.50 per day to rent a Blu-Ray DVD, and $2 per day to rent a video game.  These prices may seem low, but if you are a person who would like to watch over 9-10 movies per month, it would be more cost beneficial to use Netflix. The availability of films, TV shows, and video games is also extremely limited, as it depends on with machine you go to, and whether or not the DVD is already being rented or not. Finally, Redbox limits customers to 25 days of renting for DVDs, 23 days for Blu-Ray DVDs, and 30 days for video games, whereas Netflix has no late fees or due dates.

Netflix: Pricing & packages

Netflix uses a monthly subscription fee for online streaming, and a seperate monthly fee for DVD rentals by mail. To stream media online, Netflix charges $7.99 per month. This subscription is more cost effective than renting individual DVDs from competitors, especially if you watch over 3 movies per month (versus Blockbuster), or 9-10 movies per month (versus Redbox). This is the only cost to stream movies and television programs online, and is not expected to rise.

The price to rent DVDs by mail from Netflix is also $7.99 per month. This is cheaper than Blockbuster's fee of $9.99 per month, and is more cost effective than Redbox if you rent multiple movies. Customers can also rent Blu-Ray DVDs for an extra $2 per month, totalling $9.99. This is similar to Blockbuster's flat rate of $9.99 per month.

Netflix: Customer reviews & comments

Feedback from Netflix customers is overwhelmingly positive, with their main praises pointing to their large selection of movies and television programs, their competitive prices, and their fast shipping for DVD rentals by mail. Customers love that with Netflix, the media comes to you, and applaud the service for its convenience. They also appreciate that Netflix has one of the largest movie selections at over 100,000 choices, while keeping the choices at a high quality by pulling in media from the Starz network.

Another popular point of the service is their free trials. Netflix offers two weeks of free trial, with these trials having the same content and accessibility as the full price subscription. Parents also love Netflix because it gives them the option to set limits on what their children can and cannot watch - even when the parents are not there to monitor them.

Overall, Netflix is an extremely popular choice when it comes to media rental and streaming.

“I still use Netflix”

Netflix is an online company offering consumers many options for watching videos. They were one of the first companies to launch a site with the concept of streaming videos straight to your computer anytime you want day or night.

You can also order movies and depending on your membership, they will send you at least one DVD-Blue Ray, or Traditional, for you to keep in your home for as long as you want. When you do return the video, the company will send you the next video on the list ... read more
